A Path from Adversity to Agro-Entrepreneurship

Success in Establishing Pumpkin as a Highly Profitable Crop

A significant milestone in Mr. Haloi’s journey came in 2012 when he established the Seven Star Vegetable Grower Society (now Sankardeva Jaibik Krishi Farm). He focused on organic farming, cultivating vegetables like cucumber, tomato, ridge gourd, and especially pumpkin. Using the fallow land on the banks of the Pagladia River, he applied innovative techniques like offseason planting of pumpkin during July-August. This method not only reduced irrigation costs but also allowed for early harvests, taking advantage of high market demand when the supply of vegetables was low. In 2012, his farm earned Rs. 17 lakhs, with 70% of this income coming from pumpkin alone. Today, the farm has grown into a successful venture, generating Rs. 30-40 lakhs annually. Mr. Haloi’s innovative approach and effective leadership have turned the farm into a model of agro-entrepreneurship in the region.

Expansion into Agro-Tourism.

Mr. Haloi didn’t stop at farming. He also established agro-tourism in the Nalbari district, helping promote local tourism and agricultural practices. His farm became a destination for visitors to experience organic farming up close, further boosting the local economy and promoting sustainable agriculture.
